In his own words, "What I do is, record the guitar with an amp sound and also as a DI track, using the Creation Audio Labs MW-1 ( ow.ly ). Then later, if I decide I want a bit more or less distortion, or want to add another amp tone, I use the MW-1 to send the DI signal back out into an amp. TRICK QUESTION ALERT! Fender DeLuxe 90, Peavey Valve King and Marshall JTM 60 amps are compared side by side by the author playing the same passage on a Strat. Two amps are actually tube while ONLY ONE is solid state. Can you tell which before the end of the clip? All amps are played "clean". The passage played is a simplified lick from the song "Cold Shot". The tone controls on all amps were set at the mid point to showcase the natural voicing of each amp. While the first and third amps were slightly off axis from the microphone in the center of the room, the volumes were set to compensate. The play back is "close" to the natural room sound. We love tube amps for their unique distortion, natural compression, and limited frequency response. Truth be told, there is little advantage to tube amps played clean. My Dad, a retired engineer, cut his teeth on tubes and dismissed any advantages of tube amps for guitar. He was amazed to learn that Carlos Santana's early signature tone came from carefully tailored tube amp distortion!
